Join me as I undertake a slow (but hopefully steady!) voyage into homesteading. My story is only just beginning. For a bit of background, I’ll introduce myself.
My name is Gabrielle (Gabi for short). In 2017, I graduated from college and have been gently spiraling into my quarter-life crisis ever since. Farming has been a dream of mine since I was quite young, but it was always one of those far off wishes that I never considered realistically. Of course I knew people farmed, but I never thought it was something I could actually do myself.
In 2018, I decided “Hey, I’m really gunna do it. I’m going to have my own homestead.” I’ve been working toward this goal ever since, saving money from my day job, accumulating as much knowledge as possible and building relevant skills to prepare myself for an eventual transition into a full time homestead/market farm life.
I was not a 4H kid. My family has never raised animals other than run of the mill suburban pets, and we never had a garden before I grabbed a shovel and dug up my dad’s precious lawn. I touched a live chicken for the first time in October 2019, for Pete’s sake! But I want this more than I want anything and I’m working as hard as I can to achieve my goals. Even when things don’t go as planned. Even when I’m so clueless that I can’t figure out the right questions to ask to solve a problem or to move forward. Even when I feel like a fake homesteader because I live in town and my family thinks I’m nuts for wanting to live out in the country. Wayyyyy out.
This is all me, but it’s worth it.
Personal Mission
To learn and share the skills we should’ve never forgotten. To grow real, nourishing food. To restore the land and honor our environment. To grow something, always.
This blog is, in part, a diary for me to share and remember what’s on my mind for the future. Here’s a short breakdown of some of my current goals.
Farm Goals
Stage 1
- Relocate
- Laying hens for the family
- Work more on developing the kitchen garden
Stage 2
- Sell eggs
- Establish market garden
- Produce meat — broilers for personal consumption; extras for sale
- Turkeys!!! ❤️
Stage 3
- Obtain a fiber animal → fleece/fiber for sale (natural and dyed?) and for spinning into yarn for personal use and sale
- Goats for milk → soap
